What a project is

A project keeps the chats, files, instructions, and skills for one body of work in a single place. Add the files once and write the instructions once, and every chat you start inside the project begins with that context already in hand. You stop re-uploading the same documents and re-explaining the same background.

Use a project for a client account, a research topic, a codebase, or a piece of writing you keep returning to.

What a project holds

  • The conversations you have inside the project, kept in one list.
  • The files the work runs on, added as whole folders or single documents.
  • The instructions that tell Ocai how to behave for this project.
  • The skills available to the chats in the project.

Your files, as they are

Upload a folder and the folder structure comes with it. Subfolders stay subfolders and file names stay file names. Files keep their original format, so Ocai works with the exact documents you added rather than a converted copy.

Use Browse Folder to pick a folder from your computer, or drag one onto the project. Single files work the same way, and one drop can carry both.

Project instructions and global instructions

Global Instructions apply to all of your chats. Project Instructions apply only inside one project. Write global instructions for how you generally like to work, and project instructions for how this particular project should be handled.

Why keep work in a project

  • Your files and instructions carry into every chat in the project.
  • The work stays in one place instead of spread across separate conversations.
  • Skills for the work can live with it, instead of sitting in your general set.
  • Conversations stay listed with the project, so the thread is easy to pick up again.

Creating a project

  1. Open Projects and create a new one. Give it a name.
  2. Add the files the work needs, as folders or individual documents.
  3. Write the project instructions.
  4. Add the skills that chats in this project should have available.
  5. Start a chat inside the project.

Managing a project

  • Edit Project Details to change the name or description.
  • Add or remove files as the work moves on.
  • Conversations stay listed with the project.

Questions people ask

Is a project the same as the Workspace that used to be here?

Workspace is retired. Projects hold the files, instructions, and conversations that used to be split between the workspace and collections.

Do project skills work outside the project?

No. A skill you add to a project is available to that project's chats and nowhere else.

Do I have to keep every chat inside a project?

No. A chat you start outside a project uses your global instructions and the skills you attach to it.
