What an attachment is
An attachment is material you hand Ocai alongside a message: a document, an image, a file of any type, pasted text, or a link. It goes into that conversation and Ocai works with it there.
Attaching in a chat
- Drag files in from your computer, wherever they are on disk.
- Browse Files to pick them instead, if dragging is awkward.
- Paste text straight into the message for anything on your clipboard.
- Drop a link and Ocai reads the page it points to.
Any file type is accepted, not a fixed list of extensions. If it is a file your computer can open, Ocai can be given it.
Folders come from a project
A chat takes files. To send a whole folder, add it to a project instead, where the files panel has a Browse Folder option and accepts a folder dropped onto it.
Folder upload carries the structure with it. Subfolders arrive as subfolders and file names stay intact, which is what you want when the material is a codebase, a set of documents, or a directory of images. Once the folder is in the project, every chat inside that project has it in context.
Your files as they are
Files are used in the format they arrive in. A spreadsheet stays a spreadsheet, a document stays a document. Ocai works with the actual file you gave it rather than a converted stand-in, which matters when the details are the point: column names, formatting, the exact wording of a line.
When an upload fails
- Check it is a real file, and not a shortcut or a link to somewhere else.
- Try a smaller file. Very large files are the usual cause of a failed upload.
- Add a folder as a folder. Zipping a folder and attaching the archive usually produces a worse result than adding the folder to a project.
No size limit is being enforced at the moment. If that changes, this page will say so.
Questions people ask
What file types can I attach?
Any. There is no fixed list of supported extensions.
Can I attach a folder to a chat?
Not from the chat itself. Add the folder to a project, where the whole structure is kept and available to every chat in it.
Are my files converted before Ocai reads them?
No. Files keep their format, so Ocai works with your actual files.
Does attaching a file cost credits?
The file becomes part of the conversation, so it counts as input on each turn. See Credits.
